RSS 2.0 Specification: The Berkman Center at Harvard University details the history of RSS versions as well as gives explaination on the elements of this "dialect of XML".

Development on RSS has come from different sources and this should be noted. While Netscape originally passed the torch to UserLand Software a thrid party came in a developed alternate versions of RSS that diverged form UserLand's original vision.
